Roomie hair coloring advice—Give it a try!

I was racking my brain trying to come up with someone I could interview for this week’s topic. It seemed a little rude to just walk up to someone and say, “Hey do you color your hair a lot? Want to be interviewed for my blog about why people should color their hair?” For some reason, I don’t think they’d take it the right way…

And I’d probably be forced to backtrack. “Not that it looks like you color your hair—I mean, it looks really natural! I just thought… Nevermind…”

Then it hit me. My roommates! If this week’s topic was inspired by them, why shouldn’t I interview them about their experience and their opinions?

So meet Angela and Victoria. (I have a third roommate, Hope, who also colored her hair, but she wasn’t in the room when I interviewed the other two.)

Angela first started coloring her hair this past summer. (I think she tried a shade of red.) This time, she and Hope colored a blondish streak into the bottom layer of their hair. I say “they colored,” but actually it was Victoria who did the honors. The streak is really only visible when they have an up-do.

Victoria didn’t do the streak this time because she already likes the way she colored her hair a couple months ago, which is a blond, highlighted look.

Both Angela and Victoria agreed that one reason each colors her hair is for a new look—just something different. “I get bored,” Angela said, and Victoria agreed, “Yeah, sometimes you just get sick and tired of your old look.”
Angela added that for her, the process is also relaxing and almost therapeutic.

When I asked them whether they would recommend hair coloring, they both said yes, as long as the color remains natural. In other words, don’t get too crazy with it.

Angela added that she wouldn’t recommend someone color her hair on her own. “Then it sounds as if I don’t like her hair color.” But she would recommend trying it if someone were to ask her what she thought.

I was also interested in the experience of Victoria coloring Angela and Hope’s hair.

“I was nervous,” Victoria said, “because I was the one doing it.”

“You were nervous?!?” Angela exclaimed.

“I didn’t want to mess it up!” Victoria said in defense.

(Yes, this is usually how conversations go in our room.)

“Well, I wasn’t nervous,” Angela said. “It was fun. I think I trusted Victoria too much…”

I guess “all’s well that ends well.”

For those who are thinking about trying the self-coloring process, Angela recommends checking the box first to see if it’s temporary or permanent.

Victoria suggests getting it done professionally the first time because it will give you an idea what color looks good on you. After that choose whatever way you want to do it. Angela disagreed because she thinks $ 75 is too steep a price for some hair coloring. And for a college student, yeah, it probably is. But they both find it fun to color their own hair.

Neither wishes to have her natural hair color back.

So if you're considering coloring your hair, Angela and Victoria say, "Give it a try!"

  1. I like my hair color too much to try a new color! I think if I were going to dye it, I would go with a medium brown, or a lighter blonde :) not anything too different.
